The Huaxtec Culture was at its prime between 900 and 1450 CE.
The Huaxtec language diverged from Mayan in about 1500 BCE.
This civilization was at the center of a trading system which
included the SE US and the Mexican highlands. The heads shown
here date from 300-1200 CE (Classic Veracruz). These heads may “represent
individuals who were given an inebriating potion, perhaps cacao
mixed with ololiuhqui seeds (Morning Glory - Rivea corymbosa)
to induce euphoria before being sacrificed.”
